How Tahajjud time is calculated
The night lasts from Maghrib (sunset) until Fajr. We divide it into three equal parts. The last third starts two-thirds of the way through the night and is the most recommended time for Tahajjud. Islamic midnight is the halfway point.
UAE cities use the official UAE prayer time method. Other locations use the Muslim World League method (Fajr 18°), so results can differ by a few minutes from your local mosque’s timetable.
Times are shown in each city’s local time. With “Use my location”, times are in your device’s time zone. Your location is used only in your browser and is never sent to us.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time for Tahajjud?
Tahajjud can be prayed at any time after Isha until Fajr, after sleeping. The last third of the night is especially recommended, based on the hadith that Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145, Sahih Muslim 758).
How is the last third of the night calculated?
The night is measured from Maghrib (sunset) to Fajr. Divide that time into three equal parts; the last third begins two-thirds of the way through. For example, if Maghrib is at 6:00 PM and Fajr at 5:00 AM, the night is 11 hours, so the last third starts at about 1:20 AM.
What is Islamic midnight?
Islamic midnight is halfway between Maghrib and Fajr. It is often used as the end of the preferred time for Isha.
Do I need to sleep before Tahajjud?
Tahajjud is usually understood as night prayer offered after waking from sleep. Night prayer before sleeping (after Isha) is also rewarded and is known as Qiyam al-Layl.
